The seventy-two anecdotes have been translated from the Persian work Ahkam-i-Alamgiri authored by Aurangzib’s favourite officer Hamid-ud-din Khan Nimcha. A work unutilized by historians and whose existence was uncovered by pioneer-scholar Jadunath Sarkar the book is both interesting and valuable. It provides a unique insight into Aurangzib’s character and government policies and reveals little known information about his first love, his treatment of his sons, the nobles, the Hindus and the Shias.

Anecdotes of Aurangzib is, in part, a first hand account, many a note quoted being penned by the protagonist himself. Annotations by Jadunath Sarkar enhance the value of the book.
