Belagat-i Osmaniyye - Ottoman Eloquence - 1882

This is one of the two major books that he composed on the Ottoman language. The other one which I would like to post here, Qava'id-i Osmaniyye (or Kava'id-i Osmaniyye), is simpler and better for intermediate learners, but the copies I found so far all have missing or damaged pages.

Belagat-i Osmaniyye was enormously popular after its first publication in 1882, and it went through several reprints. While its predecessor, Kava'id-i Osmaniyye, offers charts with declensions and conjugations, Belagat-i Osmaniyye concentrates on some of the most elaborate forms of Ottoman.

The example sentences are short, but the explanations themselves are complex, and supplemented with poetry and details of prosody. You should be familiar with some Arabic grammar terms before embarking onto this one. On the other hand, if you finish it, you can be sure that you can read anything Ottoman in print.

The edition is in Ottoman script, but the image above is from the latest edition by Karabey and Atalay (2000) which is in Latin script. I cannot scan it now, as I don't have a scanner here.

However, I will work on improving this post by addiing Kava'id-i Osmaniyye and a few more elements to it. Consider it work in progress, and read it a few times to profit from it fully -- it's my third time to read it, I really want to understand what they considered to be verbally beautiful.
