Gonur was the most important city in the kingdom of Margiana in Central Asia, founded by Indo-Iranian tribes whose religion, Iranian paganism, formed the basis for the ancient eastern religion of Zoroastrism.

The cemetery of Gonur, which was excavated by Victor Sarianidi, yielded about 3,000 tombs, dating from the end of the 3rd to the beginning of the 2nd millennium BC.

This book contains the results of the excavations, anthropological observations based on the skeletons found, and a large number and wide variety of finds: bronzes and pottery, stone and bone artefacts, jewellery, sculpture, seals and delicate mosaics.

These works rival the artistic creations of the great centres of that period and bear witness to the fact that the art of Margiana flourished greatly in the 2nd millennium BC.
